NOBODY IS SPECIAL

There are no special people, I am more and more convinced of this. Being special means that we assume an emerging character, a role, which is above Creation. To see ourselves as special is an arrogant attitude and a posture towards the depth and complexity of what it means to be human. This need is justified, in the eyes of Social Psychology, by a lack that all of us, as wandering beings, manifest: we want to feel equal to our peers, but still different. It is this tendency towards specialty that lies at the heart of the matter. Being special is comforting at the same time as it takes away, to some extent, some of the responsibility for our own actions.

This has been a subject that has flooded my ideas with great fervor. This thesis was brought to me through a sensitive person, who takes a critical stance towards the reality which surrounds her and which, in her words, aspires towards universal conclusions, thoughts that inhabit the true communion of Humanity; her name is Angela Rijo. We met at university during a time that I was depressed. Our connection and complicity were immediate. I like to talk to Angela because she adds condiment to my thinking … And it was in a spicy debate in which I came to my conclusion!

“THERE  WILL BE SHADOWS IN OUR PATH OF LIGHT.”

The sky was clear, a heavenly blue; two beasts prepare to face each other. On one side a lion with a prominent mane, on the other: a lioness with a glare. It was a struggle in which respect prevailed, the Holy Spirit was present in every word: Theology and Physics, two faces of distinct coins that were in a confrontation ruled by friendship. It was in this atmosphere that Angela and I became inebriated, aware of the limits of human understanding.

“Either we’re all special, or no one’s special.” Despite having fallen into a fallacy (reasoning error), Angela’s statement revived me in the soul and made me realize that I have the same importance as the vagabond dog that walks idly through the streets of the city, the same importance of the bird that rips splendorously through the sky, the same importance as the unitary basis of life – the atom … There will be shadows in our path of light. It is up to us to discern the path of Truth.
